Thunzi Bush Lodge offers a real treat for the whole family – Unwind at the Lazy-Lizard pool, enjoy a romantic picnic in a serene setting.

Go Bass fishing and/or canoeing with the family or simply relax around a fire while the birds chirp in the background

Thunzi Bush Lodge offers a little slice of heaven just 30km from the hustle and bustle of Port Elizabeth’s city centre. The country style self-catering accommodation in Colleen Glen is where rustic meets luxury.

My family was invited for a two-night stay away from the stresses of city life.

There are plenty of activities on offer to keep the children entertained, allowing mom and dad to sit back and unwind — all in a safe and wholesome environment.

From bass fishing to forest walks and hikes, or even sandboarding on the nearby Maitlands sand dunes, in one way or another something is bound to tickle your fancy.

We stayed in a charming and comfortably furnished two-bedroom chalet with a breathtaking forest view.

The unit has its own lounge with full DSTV, and a dining area with an open plan kitchen. There is also daily housekeeping and laundry service.

All units are self-catering, making it a more affordable getaway, but should you wish to visit a restaurant for a meal or even just a drink, The Elephant Walk Restaurant & Country Pub, Barnacles Restaurant and the Three Legged Pig are just some of the popular surrounding options.

After enjoying a comforting lunch at The Three Legged Pig, my husband, children and I made our way to Thunzi Bush Lodge where, after checking in, we immediately made a beeline for the pool.

It is easy to see why the communal pool is known as the lazy-lizard pool, with its sun loungers and breathtaking setting, it is the perfect spot to cool down and soak up some Vitamin D.

The lodge also sells cooldrinks and alcoholic beverages which can be enjoyed pool side, though when we were there, the restrictions on alcohol sales were unfortunately still in place.

The lodge has two dams where bass fishing and canoeing can be enjoyed as a family, and so after a couple of hours in the sun, we were able to catch the sunset on a canoe.

Another perk is that each unit has its own private boma where, in the evenings, Thunzi staff light the fire for each of their guests to enjoy a braai if they wish.
